Building for wind, rain and salt
On the north coast, around Hartland, Croyde and Woolacombe, buildings face Atlantic weather. On the south coast, around Salcombe and the Exe estuary, the challenge is often sloping sites and protected views. On Dartmoor, granite, wind and mist shape everything.
We choose materials that cope: slate, granite, charred or heavy-sectioned timber, lime render and robust metal details. Windows are set deep, roofs are simple, and overhangs are sized for driving rain.
A complex planning landscape
Devon has several district councils, including Exeter, East Devon, Teignbridge, South Hams, West Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon and Torridge, each with its own local plan. Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are separate planning authorities with their own, stricter policies. Much of the coast is designated as a National Landscape.
Replacement dwellings are a common route to a new home, and local policies usually limit the size increase. Holiday letting, principal residence restrictions and second-home policies vary between areas and can affect what you are allowed to build.
Typical Devon projects
Replacement dwellings on coastal and rural plots. New homes on infill sites in villages. Farmhouse and barn renovations. Contemporary extensions to cob and stone cottages, which need breathable construction and specialist knowledge.
Access and logistics matter more in Devon than almost anywhere else we work. Narrow lanes limit delivery sizes, coastal sites can be exposed for months, and good local builders are often booked well ahead. We factor this into the design, the choice of construction system and the programme, so the house can be built as drawn.

Questions about Devon
Can I replace my existing house in Devon with a new one?
Usually, subject to local policy on size, design and landscape impact. In the National Parks the rules are stricter. A site appraisal tells you what is likely to be acceptable.
Do you work with cob buildings?
Yes. Cob needs breathable materials and careful detailing. We use lime renders and plasters and avoid cement-based or impermeable finishes.
